This bill allows former full-time police officers of the New York City Police Department (NYPD) who were born between January 1, 1985, and January 1, 1990, to be eligible to take the competitive civil service examination for the position of police officer. If these former officers pass the examination with a sufficiently high score, they will be placed on the eligible list for appointment as a full-time police officer in New York City. The bill overrides existing provisions in the civil service law and administrative code that might otherwise prevent these former officers from reapplying. However, these individuals will still be subject to the standard merit and fitness requirements that apply to full-time police officers. The legislation is designed to provide a pathway for these specific former NYPD officers to potentially return to service, and it takes effect immediately upon enactment.
