This bill modifies Tennessee law regarding how political parties fill vacancies for certain elected positions, specifically judges, district attorneys general, and public defenders, when these vacancies occur late in the election cycle. Previously, the process for filling such vacancies might have been more restrictive, but this bill allows statewide political parties to use any method they deem appropriate according to their own rules to select nominees for these positions if the vacancy arises later than 180 days before the qualifying deadline for candidates. The bill also clarifies that the chair of the nominating body must officially inform the coordinator of elections about the chosen nominee by the established deadline, and independent candidates will follow a separate process for qualifying. The coordinator of elections will then inform local election commissions about the nominated candidates.
