This bill amends the Illinois Pension Code to modify how disability and survivor's benefits are calculated for downstate police and firefighters who receive workers' compensation benefits. Specifically, the bill adds a provision that if a survivor is entitled to benefits due to a decedent's sickness, accident, or injury that occurred in the line of duty or resulted from cumulative duty-related effects, there will be no reduction in their pension benefits. Currently, when a person is eligible for both workers' compensation and pension benefits for the same injury or disease, the pension benefits are typically reduced. The bill eliminates this reduction specifically for survivors of police and firefighters who die as a result of duty-related incidents. Additionally, the bill amends the State Mandates Act to require implementation of these changes without reimbursement by the state.
