AN ACT To amend an Act establishing a city court in the city of Carrollton, in the county of Carroll, approved December 21, 1897 (Ga. L. 1897, p. 438), as amended, so as to provide an additional judge for such court; to provide for the appointment of such additional judge of such court; to provide for the election of successors; to provide for a chief judge; to provide for related matters; to provide for effective dates; to repeal conflicting laws; and for other purposes.

AI Summary

This bill amends the existing law for the State Court of Carroll County by adding an additional judge to the court, effective July 1, 2025. The current judge will become the chief judge, and a new judge will be appointed by the Governor for an initial term from July 1, 2025, through December 31, 2026. The subsequent judge will be elected in the 2026 nonpartisan judicial election for a four-year term starting January 1, 2027. Both judges will be elected at nonpartisan general elections without a primary, and they will each receive an annual salary equal to 90% of the Superior Court judge's salary, paid monthly from county funds. The judges are required to work full-time, cannot engage in private legal practice, and are allowed to hire a secretary with a minimum annual salary of $14,750, which can be increased with county approval. The bill becomes effective immediately for appointing the initial associate judge and fully takes effect on July 1, 2025, with all conflicting laws being repealed.
