This bill requires certain health insurers, nonprofit health service plans, and health maintenance organizations in Maryland to provide coverage for genetic testing and follow-up cancer imaging for individuals with a personal or family history of cancer. Specifically, the bill mandates coverage for genetic testing that identifies inherited mutations associated with increased cancer risk, when recommended by a healthcare professional and consistent with clinical practice guidelines. If the genetic testing determines an individual is at an increased risk of developing cancer, the insurer must also cover follow-up cancer imaging that is recommended for the specific type of cancer identified and uses imaging modalities established in the National Comprehensive Cancer Network Clinical Practice Guidelines in Oncology. The bill originally proposed prohibiting these insurers from imposing copayments, coinsurance, or deductibles for these services, but that provision appears to have been removed. The new requirements will apply to all health insurance policies, contracts, and health benefit plans issued, delivered, or renewed in Maryland on or after January 1, 2026, with the bill taking effect on that same date.
