This bill establishes the Display of Founding Documents of Historic Significance Act, which requires school districts to display at least four selected historical documents in classrooms for students in grades four through twelve. The specified documents include the Mayflower Compact, Declaration of Independence, Northwest Ordinance, U.S. and Ohio mottoes, Ten Commandments, Magna Carta, Bill of Rights, U.S. Constitution, and Articles of Confederation. School boards have flexibility in selecting which specific documents to display in each classroom or school building. The bill also allows schools to erect monuments or markers with these documents on school grounds. Each displayed document must be reasonably visible and accompanied by a description of its historical importance. Schools that receive donated funds or displays must comply with these requirements by July 1, 2026, and can accept donated funds or displays to help implement the requirement. The Department of Education and Workforce is tasked with providing online materials to help schools comply with the new law. Additionally, the bill amends existing sections of Ohio law to ensure that community schools, science and technology schools, and college-preparatory boarding schools also adhere to these document display requirements.
