This bill requires commercial driver training programs in Rhode Island to incorporate industry-specific training on human trafficking recognition, prevention, and reporting into their curriculum. Specifically, any trade school or educational program offering commercial motor vehicle operation instruction, as well as entities employing certified commercial driving instructors, must include this training as part of their course curriculum. The Office of the Postsecondary Commissioner will be responsible for ensuring these instruction requirements are met and must work with human trafficking prevention organizations to annually review and update the training content to reflect current changes and trends in human trafficking. The goal of this legislation is to equip commercial drivers with the knowledge and skills to identify, prevent, and report potential human trafficking situations, leveraging their unique position of being on the road and potentially witnessing trafficking activities. The bill would take effect immediately upon its passage.
