This bill mandates that the Tennessee Department of Education must offer at least one free professional development course for teachers in grades 6-12 that uses asynchronous instruction, meaning it can be completed at the teacher's own pace and time, on how to effectively use artificial intelligence (AI) in the classroom, with the course content developed by experts in STEM fields like computer science. Furthermore, all teachers in grades 6-12 will be required to complete at least one such department-approved AI professional development course by August 1, 2028, or within two years of obtaining their teaching license, whichever date comes later, with local education agencies (LEAs) and public charter schools responsible for approving these courses for professional development credit according to state board of education rules.
