This bill expands the Maryland Department of Natural Resources' annual scientific survey of striped bass (also known as rockfish) to include more comprehensive sampling in the central region of the Chesapeake Bay. Specifically, the bill requires the department to conduct sampling using methods equivalent to its existing young-of-the-year juvenile index survey in at least two sites in the central region of Maryland's Chesapeake Bay waters. The sampling sites in this central region can now include waterways such as the Magothy River, Severn River, Chester River, South River, West River, Eastern Bay, Miles River, Patapsco River, Rhode River, and Tred Avon River. The department is mandated to annually examine the survey data to ensure the distribution of striped bass has not shifted from established sites, and must report its findings by December 31st each year to various fisheries advisory commissions and legislative committees. The bill includes a sunset provision, with most provisions remaining in effect for two years and one month, ending on June 30, 2027, after which they will automatically be abrogated unless further legislative action is taken.
