The resolution highlights Mattison's military service during World War II, where he was inducted into the U.S. Army in 1943, deployed to the European Theater with the 29th Infantry Division, and participated in the Normandy Campaign, during which he was wounded and awarded both a Purple Heart and the French Medal of Honor. After his military service, Mattison spent 40 years with the Bennington Police Department, ultimately retiring as the department's acting chief. The resolution also notes that during his centennial birthday celebration at the Bennington Elks Club, the local sheriff established an annual $1,000 scholarship in Mattison's name for aspiring law enforcement professionals.
