This resolution recognizes and celebrates the 30th anniversary of Neighbors' Consejo, a nonprofit organization founded in 1994 in Washington, D.C.'s Mt. Pleasant neighborhood to address rising homelessness and addiction, particularly among the Latino community. The organization initially focused on providing free, culturally and linguistically appropriate mental health and community support services to Central American migrants who had experienced trauma, and has since expanded its reach to serve African American and Latino neighbors across the city. Neighbors' Consejo has demonstrated significant community impact, including acquiring three houses in 2007 to serve as community shelters, providing temporary refuge during neighborhood emergencies, and establishing service centers in northwest and southeast D.C. The organization was also honored with the American Psychiatric Association Foundation's 2023 Award for Advancing Minority Health, and continues to operate with a vision of creating a community of happy, healthy, and self-sufficient neighbors. The resolution officially recognizes the organization's 30-year commitment to serving vulnerable populations and takes effect immediately upon passage.
