This resolution officially redesignates Poteet as the Strawberry Capital of Texas, recognizing the city's century-long history of strawberry cultivation and its iconic annual Strawberry Festival. The resolution highlights Poteet's strawberry legacy, which began in 1911 when city founders Henry and Ida Mumme started growing strawberries in their kitchen garden, and within a decade, the crop became a significant local product. The Poteet Rotary Club initiated the Strawberry Festival in 1948 to support World War II veterans returning to local farms, and the event has since grown to a major annual celebration attracting 100,000 visitors and generating up to $12 million for the local economy. The festival not only showcases the region's strawberry production but also supports local students through scholarships provided by the Poteet Strawberry Festival Association and various community organizations. Under this resolution, Poteet will maintain its official Strawberry Capital designation for 10 years, in accordance with Section 391.003(e) of the Government Code, effectively recognizing the city's agricultural heritage and cultural significance in Texas.
