This resolution proclaims January 30, 2025, as "Rhode Island Food Insecurity Awareness Day" in response to significant food insecurity challenges facing the state. The resolution highlights that in 2024, a record number of Rhode Islanders needed food assistance due to high food prices, rising housing costs, and the end of COVID-19 relief programs. According to the 2024 annual Status Report on Hunger in Rhode Island, 38% of households cannot meet their basic food needs, with communities of color experiencing disproportionately higher rates of food insecurity. The Rhode Island Community Food Bank distributed 18.3 million pounds of food through 147 member agencies in fiscal year 2024, serving 84,400 individuals monthly—a 9% increase from the previous year. The resolution aims to raise public awareness about the growing food insecurity problem and demonstrate the state's commitment to addressing the health and well-being of its residents. Additionally, the resolution directs the Secretary of State to send a certified copy of the resolution to Andrew Schiff, the Chief Executive Officer of the Rhode Island Community Food Bank.
