This bill modifies the existing social services law to change caregiver-to-child ratio requirements for group family day care homes and family day care homes. Specifically, the bill adjusts the previous requirement of one caregiver for every two children under two years of age to now require one caregiver for every two children under eighteen months of age. This change applies to both group family day care homes (which can care for seven to twelve children) and family day care homes (which can care for three to six children). Group family day care homes must still have an assistant present when caring for seven or more children who are not school-age, and family day care providers can still care for up to seven or eight children under certain conditions, such as having school-aged children receive care primarily before or after school hours. The bill will take effect 180 days after becoming law, giving day care providers time to adjust to the new caregiver ratio requirements. The modification aims to potentially improve child care supervision and safety for the youngest children in home-based day care settings.
