This bill, known as "Tucker's Law," establishes October as "Fentanyl Poisoning Awareness Month" in all Tennessee public schools, requiring local education agencies (LEAs) and public charter schools to provide age-appropriate, research-based instruction about fentanyl abuse prevention and drug poisoning awareness to students in grades six through twelve. The mandatory instruction must comprehensively cover topics including suicide prevention, fentanyl abuse and addiction prevention, awareness of local school and community resources for support, and health education focusing on substance use and abuse among youth. Schools can deliver this instruction through various entities such as higher education institutions, libraries, community service organizations, religious organizations, local public health agencies, or organizations employing mental health professionals. The bill is designed to educate students about the significant dangers posed by fentanyl, including the risks of overdose, and will take effect on July 1, 2025, with the aim of promoting public welfare by increasing awareness and prevention of fentanyl-related harm among adolescents.
