This bill expands the powers of the Center for Firearm Violence Prevention and Intervention (the Center) to include creating resources, tools, and educational materials focused on firearm safety and related prevention strategies. Specifically, the Center is now authorized to develop materials about secure firearm storage, extreme risk protective orders (legal orders that temporarily remove firearms from individuals deemed a risk to themselves or others), suicide prevention (including promoting the 9-8-8 Suicide and Crisis Lifeline), and other topics the Center deems necessary to promote firearm safety. The bill allows the Center to consult with state and local agencies and third-party organizations while developing these materials. These new provisions are part of the Center's broader mission to reduce firearm violence through a public health approach, which includes partnering with various agencies, soliciting recommendations from experts and affected communities, and developing strategic plans. The new capabilities aim to provide educational resources and increase awareness about firearm safety and violence prevention strategies. The bill will take effect on October 1, 2025, giving the Center time to prepare and develop these new resources and materials.
