This bill amends Tennessee law to provide specific provisions for antique emergency vehicles, which are defined as ambulances, fire department vehicles, or law enforcement vehicles that meet the criteria of an antique motor vehicle. The bill allows these vehicles to be used for participation in community and educational events like fairs, festivals, and school displays, and during weekends and holidays. It also establishes guidelines for the installation and operation of emergency lights, sirens, and bells on these vehicles. Owners of antique emergency vehicles must obtain written authorization from the local law enforcement agency or fire department chief to use era-appropriate emergency lights or sirens. The lights and sirens can only be used while the vehicle is stationary at public events, part of an organized parade or ceremonial event, or on private property with the owner's permission. Additionally, the bill clarifies that operating an antique emergency vehicle according to these guidelines does not constitute criminal impersonation. These changes will take effect on July 1, 2025, and are designed to allow preservation and public display of historic emergency vehicles while maintaining appropriate restrictions on their use.
