AI Summary

This bill, named the Deputy Chief Pete Bendinelli PFAS PPE Act, amends the PFAS Reduction Act to address the use of PFAS (Per- and Polyfluoroalkyl Substances) in firefighting personal protective equipment. Starting January 1, 2026, sellers of firefighting personal protective clothing containing PFAS chemicals must provide written notice to purchasers, clearly stating the presence of PFAS and explaining why these chemicals are added to the equipment. Both sellers and purchasers must keep a copy of this notice for at least three years and must provide it to the Illinois Environmental Protection Agency upon request. Beginning January 1, 2027, the bill prohibits the manufacture, sale, distribution, or use of firefighting personal protective clothing with intentionally added PFAS chemicals. Additionally, by January 1, 2030, this prohibition will extend to auxiliary firefighting personal protective equipment, such as breathing apparatuses, hearing protection, and communication devices. The bill defines key terms like "firefighting personal protective clothing" and aims to reduce PFAS exposure in critical safety equipment used by firefighters and emergency personnel.
