This bill amends Rhode Island's housing code enforcement laws to require housing code enforcement officers to provide copies of housing code violation notices directly to all tenants in a building where violations are found, in addition to notifying the property owner. Specifically, the bill mandates that when a code enforcement officer identifies housing code violations, they must not only serve notice to the property owner, but also provide tenants with a copy of the violation notice and information about any scheduled hearings. This can be done either by personally delivering the notice to tenants or by sending it via certified or registered mail. Additionally, the bill requires that tenants be notified of all hearings related to the violations, either by certified mail or by posting the summons in a conspicuous place in the building. The goal of this legislation appears to be increasing transparency and ensuring that tenants are fully informed about housing code violations affecting their living spaces, giving them an opportunity to be aware of and potentially participate in addressing potential housing safety or maintenance issues.
