This bill modifies existing law to provide retired police officers and firefighters with more flexibility in earning additional income while receiving retirement benefits. Specifically, the bill amends Section 45-21-24 of the General Laws to allow beneficiaries who retire under Chapter 21.2 of Title 45 to earn income that, when combined with their current compensation, can total up to five times their pre-retirement rate of earnable compensation. Previously, retired disability annuitants were limited to earning an amount that would not exceed their original rate of earnable compensation. The bill maintains other existing provisions, such as the retirement board's ability to adjust disability allowances based on gainful occupation and the requirement for medical examinations. The legislation will take effect immediately upon passage, providing immediate expanded earning opportunities for eligible retired first responders.
