This resolution commemorates the 40th anniversary of the Washington state Public Works Board, which was established in 1985 to help local governments finance critical infrastructure projects. Created in response to a 1983 report highlighting over $2 billion in infrastructure needs, the Board consists of 13 members appointed by the governor, representing cities, counties, water-sewer districts, public utility districts, and the general public. The Board administers low-interest loans and grants for essential infrastructure projects including drinking water, sanitary sewer, stormwater, road, bridge, and solid waste systems. Since its inception, the Public Works Board has invested nearly $3.5 billion in over 2,200 projects benefiting residents and businesses across Washington state, and in the past six years alone has saved local governments $188 million in interest rate savings and grants. The resolution celebrates the Board's success in preserving public health and safety, protecting the environment, supporting affordable housing, and creating family-wage jobs, while also noting that its model has been recognized and emulated by other states.
