This bill modifies the composition of firefighters' pension boards by allowing county auditors and county treasurers to appoint designees to serve on these boards. Specifically, the bill amends existing law to permit the county auditor and county treasurer to have a designated representative serve on the five-member pension board, instead of requiring their personal attendance. The board will continue to be composed of the fire commissioners' chairperson (who serves as board chairperson), the county auditor or their designee, the county treasurer or their designee, and two firefighters (either currently employed or retired) who are elected by secret ballot from among their peers. The bill maintains the existing provisions for board operations, including the ability to elect a third alternate member, fill vacancies, and select a secretary. The legislation also preserves the existing alternative election provisions that allow for broader eligibility if no active or retired firefighters are willing to serve, such as including retired firefighters from the jurisdiction or a firefighter's surviving spouse.
