AI Summary
This bill amends the Illinois Pension Code to provide additional protections for Chicago police officers seeking disability benefits. Specifically, the bill establishes that a police officer who has been denied reinstatement by their employer due to physical or mental incapacity shall be presumed disabled. The bill prevents employers from denying disability benefits to an officer who meets the requirements unless the officer is reinstated or offered a limited-duty position. Furthermore, any police officer who was previously denied disability benefits without an offer of reinstatement or a limited-duty position is now entitled to receive those benefits. The bill also amends the State Mandates Act to clarify that the state is not required to reimburse local governments for implementing these changes. The key terms include "disability benefits" (financial support for officers unable to work due to injury or illness), "limited-duty position" (a role with reduced responsibilities accommodating an officer's medical condition), and "presumed disabled" (legally considered disabled without requiring additional proof). This legislation aims to provide more comprehensive support for police officers who are unable to continue their full active duty due to medical reasons.
