This bill amends the New York Vehicle and Traffic Law to require holders of a Class DJ or Class MJ learner's permit (new teenage drivers) to display a sign indicating they are a new driver while operating a vehicle. The sign must be visible to both oncoming and following traffic and will be created and distributed by the commissioner when the learner's permit is issued. This addition comes alongside existing restrictions for learner's permit holders, which already include limitations such as: not driving with multiple young passengers, ensuring all vehicle occupants are properly restrained, and only being accompanied by a supervising driver. The bill aims to increase awareness that a new, potentially less experienced driver is operating the vehicle, which could help other drivers exercise additional caution. The new requirement will take effect on the first of September following the bill's enactment into law.
