This bill establishes an obesity treatment study committee to examine the potential benefits of expanding Medicaid (Arizona Health Care Cost Containment System or AHCCCS) coverage to include comprehensive obesity treatment. The committee will consist of 9 members, including two senators, two representatives, directors from AHCCCS and the Department of Health Services, two patient advocacy representatives, two medical professionals, and a registered dietitian. The committee members will not receive compensation but can be reimbursed for expenses. Their primary responsibilities include conducting a comprehensive study on the cost, potential savings, effectiveness, and health outcomes of obesity treatment coverage, identifying resources to enhance public health, and reviewing current policies to improve outcomes for people living with obesity. By December 31, 2025, the committee must submit a detailed report with their findings and recommendations to the governor, senate president, house speaker, and secretary of state. The committee and its section of law will be automatically repealed on September 30, 2026, making this a time-limited initiative designed to provide insights into obesity treatment coverage and potential policy improvements.
