AI Summary
This bill introduces several key changes to Georgia's laws regarding speed detection devices and red light cameras in school zones. It redefines "school zone" to be based on official Department of Transportation orders rather than a fixed 1,000-foot boundary and establishes that school zone speed limits cannot vary for more than two hours total per day. The bill mandates more detailed signage requirements for automated traffic enforcement devices, including signs that must be placed up to one-half mile from a school zone, display the specific school zone speed limit, and include flashing yellow lights when the zone is active. The legislation also modifies when speed enforcement can occur, specifying that automated devices can only issue citations for speeds more than ten miles per hour over the posted limit and only when the school zone speed limit is in effect. Additionally, the bill expands the authority of district attorneys, solicitors-general, and prosecuting attorneys to enforce civil monetary penalties related to school zone speeding violations. The changes will take effect on July 1, 2025, with some provisions for existing permits having a slightly later implementation date of January 1, 2026, ensuring a smooth transition for current traffic enforcement systems.
