This bill modifies the process for reappointing county school superintendents in Maryland by allowing county boards of education more flexibility in renewing a superintendent's contract. Specifically, the bill changes existing law to permit county boards to take action to reappoint an incumbent superintendent at any time after the second year of their term, but no later than March 1 of the year the contract is being renewed, with the new 4-year term to begin on the following July 1. The bill removes the previous requirement that superintendents notify the county board by February 1 of their intention to seek reappointment and simplifies the appointment process. The bill does not apply to Baltimore City and has some special provisions for Prince George's County. The changes are designed to provide county boards with more discretion in maintaining continuity of leadership in their school systems, with the new provisions set to take effect on June 1, 2025.
