AI Summary

This bill amends the Genetic Information Privacy Act to expand protections for individuals' genetic information in the context of life insurance. Specifically, the bill prohibits insurers from seeking genetic testing information when considering a life insurance policy, with an important exception: if an individual voluntarily submits genetic test results that are favorable to them, the insurer may consider those results. The bill also reinforces existing privacy protections by preventing insurers from releasing genetic information to third parties without consent and prohibiting direct-to-consumer genetic testing companies from sharing genetic or personally identifiable information with health or life insurance companies without the consumer's written permission. The legislation aims to prevent genetic discrimination by ensuring that individuals are not disadvantaged by genetic information that could reveal potential health risks, while still allowing individuals to use favorable genetic test results to their benefit when applying for life insurance. The bill applies to various insurance-related activities, including policy eligibility, premium determination, and coverage renewals, with the goal of protecting individuals' genetic privacy and preventing potential discriminatory practices in the insurance industry.
