Bill Summary

AN ACT TO PERMIT STUDENTS WHO ATTEND A PUBLIC SCHOOL, PRIVATE SCHOOL, OR HOME SCHOOL WITHOUT AN INTERSCHOLASTIC ATHLETICS PROGRAM IN A GIVEN SPORT OR PARTICULAR EXTRACURRICULAR ACTIVITY TO PARTICIPATE IN THAT ACTIVITY AT A PUBLIC HIGH SCHOOL.

AI Summary

This bill allows students from public, private, and home schools to participate in sports and extracurricular activities at public high schools under certain conditions. Specifically, if a student's home school does not offer a particular sport, they can participate at the nearest public high school with that sport's program, subject to the same terms as regularly enrolled students. Private and home school students may participate at their base public high school's sports programs, or at the closest public high school with the desired sport if their base school does not offer it. Schools can charge a reasonable participation fee for non-enrolled students, which must be established by the local board of education and published on the school administrative unit's website. The bill requires local school boards to include these potential fees in their published fee schedules and provides guidelines for participation that aim to make sports and extracurricular activities more accessible to students regardless of their school type. The provisions will take effect for the 2025-2026 school year, giving schools time to prepare for implementing these new participation rules.
