This bill provides a mechanism for certain state employees who are corrections officers to elect to transfer from the state employees' retirement system (Tier 2) to the Michigan state police retirement system. Specifically, the bill allows covered position qualified participants who first became participants on or after March 31, 1997, to make a one-time, irrevocable election to switch retirement systems. For those who first became participants before February 1, 2026, the election window is 75 days from the bill's effective date; for those becoming participants on or after February 1, 2026, the election window is 75 days from their first payroll date. Participants who do not make an election within the specified timeframe are considered to have chosen to remain in the current retirement system. The bill also allows transferring participants to move both their personal contributions and, subject to vesting schedules, employer contributions to the state police retirement system to purchase service credit.
