This resolution mourns the passing of Joan Cavaness (Graves) Edwards, a lifelong Southern Illinois resident from Anna who died on December 20, 2024, and honors her significant community contributions. Born in Mounds in 1929, Edwards worked as a licensed practical nurse (LPN) administrator at Choate Mental Health and a dietary and purchasing agent for Head Start, and was deeply committed to public service, serving on the hospital board for 25 years and successfully advocating for a heliport at Union County Hospital. She was an active community member, belonging to Mount Moriah Lutheran Church, the Daughters of the Union Veterans, the Masonic Order of the White Shrine of Jerusalem (where she held the prestigious title of Past Worthy High Priestess), and was even named a Kentucky Colonel, a distinguished honor bestowed by the Governor of Kentucky. Known as the "Queen-Mom" of her local Red Hat Society, Edwards was preceded in death by her parents, son Major Louis Joe Wohlwend, granddaughter Jackie Edwards, and a great-grandson, and is survived by two sons, their spouses, a stepdaughter, five grandchildren, and four great-grandchildren. The resolution extends sincere condolences to her family and friends and directs that a copy of the resolution be presented to her family as an expression of sympathy.
