This bill provides increased flexibility for Caswell County Schools, Chapel Hill-Carrboro City Schools, and Orange County Schools in setting their academic calendars. Specifically, the bill allows local school boards to align their school calendar start dates with the start dates of community colleges in their city or county, potentially starting on the same day as the college or any day thereafter, which deviates from the current statewide requirement that schools cannot start earlier than the Monday closest to August 26. Additionally, the bill permits local boards that have implemented a school calendar concluding the fall semester before December 31 to administer student assessments prior to the semester's conclusion, which differs from the standard testing window of the final 10 instructional days for year-long courses and final 5 instructional days for semester courses. The bill will take effect immediately upon becoming law and will apply starting with the 2025-2026 school year, specifically targeting the specified school districts to provide them with more scheduling autonomy.
