This bill establishes a mandatory no-fare transportation program for emergency responders on the Long Island Rail Road specifically on September 11th each year. The program will apply to emergency medical technicians, advanced emergency medical technicians, firefighters, fire officers, fire marshals, and auxiliary police who are employed or enrolled in New York City, Nassau County, Nassau county villages and cities, Suffolk County, and Suffolk county villages. To be eligible for free transportation, emergency responders must be in uniform and show proper identification such as a shield, badge, or other authorized form of identification. The no-fare program will be available during all hours of Long Island Rail Road service on September 11th and will not be limited to off-peak hours. The bill specifies that this new program will not impact any existing no-fare programs currently implemented by the transportation authority. The Metropolitan Transportation Authority is authorized to create necessary rules and regulations to implement the program, which will take effect 120 days after becoming law.
