Bill Summary
Amends the School Code. Requires the State Board of Education to identify dates during the year of cultural or religious significance to the student population and in which students may have out-of-school commitments or otherwise be unable to participate in a major school event. Provides that, by July 1 of each year, the State Board shall prominently post on its website and distribute to each school district a nonexhaustive list of the identified corresponding days and dates of cultural, religious, or other observances for, at a minimum, the school year that begins in the next calendar year as a resource for making scheduling decisions for major school events. Provides that, upon the posting and distribution of the list, the State Board shall also inform school districts that the list is nonexhaustive and that a school district may include additional days and dates on its locally created school calendars based on community feedback or demographics. Provides that the State Board shall additionally distribute the list each year to relevant associations or entities as determined by the State Board. Effective immediately.
AI Summary
This bill amends the Illinois School Code to require the State Board of Education to create and distribute an annual guidance document for scheduling major school events that takes into account cultural, religious, and other significant dates that might impact student participation. A "major school event" is defined as a school-sanctioned activity that would be difficult for a student to make up. By July 1st each year, the State Board must publish a nonexhaustive list of culturally and religiously significant dates on its website and distribute it to school districts, helping them make more inclusive scheduling decisions. The list will include a statement encouraging schools to be mindful of dates that could affect student participation and will clarify that the guidance does not replace existing policies about religious holiday absences. School districts are explicitly encouraged to supplement the list with additional dates based on their local community demographics and feedback. The bill also requires the State Board to distribute the list to relevant associations or entities, and it takes effect immediately upon becoming law, with the goal of helping schools create more accommodating and considerate event schedules.
