Effective immediately.

AI Summary

This bill amends the Illinois Vehicle Code to introduce a new concept of "leader-follower work zone vehicles" in highway construction and maintenance zones. Specifically, these are motor vehicles equipped with automated driving systems that can be remotely connected to another vehicle, allowing coordinated movement within the operator's line of sight. The bill authorizes the Department of Transportation and the Illinois State Toll Highway Authority to implement these vehicles as a safety system to protect workers. A key provision exempts leader-follower work zone vehicles from the existing traffic law that prohibits following another vehicle too closely. The operator of the leader-follower work zone vehicle is legally considered the driver of all vehicles in the system, and these vehicles are explicitly authorized to operate in construction and maintenance zones. This innovative approach aims to enhance worker safety by using advanced automated driving technology to create a more controlled and predictable work zone environment, potentially reducing the risk of accidents involving road workers.
