This bill amends Tennessee laws related to firearms dispossession for individuals convicted of domestic assault or subject to orders of protection. The legislation requires that when a person is convicted of domestic assault or becomes subject to a protection order, they must transfer any firearms in their possession to a designated law enforcement agency within 48 hours. The individual must then complete and return to the court within three business days: a receipt from the law enforcement agency proving firearm surrender and an affidavit of firearm dispossession. The law enforcement agency is required to issue a receipt to the person surrendering the firearm, and the administrative office of the courts will develop a standard form for the firearm dispossession affidavit, which will be made available on their website. The bill also clarifies that the person is prohibited from possessing firearms for the duration of the protection order or any successive orders. Most provisions of the bill will take effect on July 1, 2025, and will apply to offenses committed on or after that date, with some initial provisions taking effect immediately to support form development.
