AI Summary
This bill amends the Illinois School Code to mandate that a student who is determined to have committed sexual violence, sexual assault, or sexual activity without consent at a school, school-sponsored activity, or school-related event shall be expelled for a period of not less than one year. The bill adds this provision to existing disciplinary guidelines that already specify mandatory expulsion for bringing weapons to school. By extending serious disciplinary consequences to sexual misconduct, the legislation aims to create safer school environments and provide a strong deterrent against sexual violence. The bill allows for some flexibility, as the superintendent may modify the expulsion period and the school board can further review the superintendent's determination on a case-by-case basis. The mandatory one-year expulsion applies regardless of whether the incident occurs during school hours, at a school-sponsored event, or at any activity reasonably connected to the school, emphasizing a comprehensive approach to addressing sexual misconduct in educational settings.
