This bill creates a Commission on Tourism within the Illinois Department of Commerce and Economic Opportunity to develop a comprehensive statewide travel and tourism strategy. The Commission will consist of 11 high-level members, including directors and leaders from various state agencies such as Commerce and Economic Opportunity, Natural Resources, Revenue, Transportation, Agriculture, Public Health, and others, with each member either serving personally or sending a senior-level designee. The primary goal of the Commission is to create recommendations for new policies and initiatives aimed at promoting both domestic and international travel to Illinois, with a specific focus on increasing the state's market share of interstate and international tourism. The strategy will include strategies to highlight Illinois' public lands, waters, shores, monuments, and other iconic destinations, with an underlying objective of expanding job creation in the tourism sector. Commission members will serve without compensation, and the Department of Commerce and Economic Opportunity will provide administrative support. The Commission is required to file its statewide travel and tourism strategy with the Governor and General Assembly within 180 days of the bill's effective date and annually thereafter.
