Students enrolled in such a charter school will be considered students of the original authorizing local education agency (LEA) and not treated as out-of-district students for funding or enrollment purposes. The bill also adjusts enrollment preferences for charter schools, allowing a preference for students residing within the geographic boundaries of the LEA who were previously enrolled in another public school, including students within the same county who were enrolled in a different LEA. Additionally, the legislation stipulates that an LEA where charter schools are using facilities but have not been authorized is not required to comply with certain existing regulations. The changes will take effect for the 2025-2026 school year and subsequent years.
