This bill extends the statute of limitations for criminal prosecution and civil actions related to child sexual abuse in Tennessee. For criminal prosecutions, the bill changes the time frame from 25 years after the victim turns 18 to 30 years after the victim turns 18, but with an important caveat: for offenses occurring between July 1, 2019, and July 1, 2025, prosecutors must provide credible corroborating evidence when pursuing cases beyond 25 years. For offenses occurring on or after July 1, 2025, prosecutors will need similar corroborating evidence when pursuing cases beyond 30 years. Similarly, for civil actions, the statute of limitations is extended from 15 years to 30 years after the victim turns 18, with an additional provision allowing for a three-year window from the time of discovery if the abuse was not initially recognized. The bill applies to offenses committed on or after July 1, 2019, and will take effect on July 1, 2025, providing survivors of child sexual abuse more time to seek legal recourse and potentially hold perpetrators accountable for past actions.
