This bill modifies the salary structure for the Sheriff of Frederick County by changing the existing fixed annual salary of $125,000 to be equivalent to the salary of a Department of State Police lieutenant colonel at the highest available step under the state police pay plan. The new salary will be determined at the beginning of the sheriff's term of office and will be based on the pay plan in effect the day before the sheriff starts their term. If the Department of State Police pay plan changes during the sheriff's current term, those changes will not affect the incumbent sheriff's salary and will only take effect during the next term of office. The bill is not retroactive and will not apply to sheriffs currently serving in a term that began before the bill's effective date, which is October 1, 2025. However, the bill does apply to individuals appointed or elected after its effective date, even if they are filling an unexpired term.
