AI Summary

This bill creates the Removal of Unlawful Publications of Obscene and Harmful Depictions On Social Media Platforms Act, which establishes requirements for social media platforms to address potentially obscene or harmful content. The bill defines key terms such as "social media platform" (an internet service that allows users to create profiles, connect with others, and share content) and "obscene depiction" (visual content that appeals to prurient interests and lacks serious artistic or scientific value). Under the law, when a social media platform receives a report of an obscene or harmful image, it must investigate the report's credibility and remove the image within 24 hours if the report is deemed credible. Additionally, the platform must report the incident to the Illinois Attorney General, including identifying information about the content's publisher. The Attorney General is then empowered to take legal action, which can include stopping violations, obtaining restitution, recovering profits, seeking damages, and imposing civil penalties up to $25,000 per violation. The bill aims to protect users from potentially harmful or inappropriate content on social media platforms by creating a rapid response mechanism for reporting and removing such content.
