This bill amends the Illinois School Code to require public elementary and high schools to include a unit of instruction on Arab American history beginning with the 2026-2027 school year. Specifically, the curriculum must cover the history of Arab Americans in Illinois and the Midwest, as well as their contributions to the United States from the 19th century onward. The unit will explore Arab Americans' achievements in government, arts, humanities, and sciences, and their contributions to the economic, cultural, social, and political development of the country. Similar to an existing requirement for Asian American history, the instruction aims to help students affirm their commitment to respecting the dignity of all races and peoples and rejecting discrimination. The State Superintendent of Education may provide instructional materials to guide schools, but individual school boards will determine the specific amount of instructional time dedicated to this unit. Regional superintendents will monitor school districts' compliance during annual visits, and schools may fulfill the requirement through online programs or courses. The bill takes effect immediately upon becoming law.
