This bill modifies two sections of Iowa Code related to county commissions of veteran affairs. Under the new provisions, these officials must: (1) comply with directives from the Iowa department of veterans affairs commandant regarding training and certification, (2) obtain a personal identification verification card for accessing the veterans benefits management system, and (3) complete all required certifications and training within one year of employment. Failure to meet these requirements can result in removal from office. The bill also stipulates that continuing education training must come only from entities approved by the department's commandant, and that training expenses will be paid from a specific appropriation. The changes are designed to ensure that county veterans affairs leadership maintains a high standard of professional qualification and ongoing training. The bill is set to take effect on July 1, 2025.
