This bill modifies the requirements for becoming a certified interior designer by shifting the focus from state-specific education and examination criteria to those established by approved national certifying organizations for interior design professionals. Specifically, it removes the previous requirement for seven years of combined academic study and work experience in interior design, including an associate degree, and instead mandates that applicants meet the educational prerequisites set by these national organizations. Similarly, the experience requirements are now aligned with what these national bodies deem necessary. The bill also changes the examination requirement, no longer requiring a separate state-specific test on fire, safety, and building codes, but instead demanding verification that the applicant has passed an examination offered by an approved national certifying organization and holds a certificate in good standing from them. Importantly, this bill provides an exemption from the educational requirements for architects who are already licensed under article one hundred forty-seven of the education law, recognizing their existing professional qualifications.
