AI Summary
This bill amends the Illinois School Code to enhance support for high school students completing financial aid applications, specifically the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). Beginning with the 2025-2026 school year, school districts will be required to provide comprehensive assistance to high school students in understanding and completing financial aid applications. This support can be offered through various formats, times, and settings, and must include an opportunity for students to receive help during the school day with their application. Schools may request free assistance from the Illinois Student Assistance Commission to help with application completion events and individual support. Importantly, while schools must provide this support, students have the choice of whether to use the offered assistance. The bill maintains existing provisions that require students to either file a FAFSA or State financial aid application, or submit a waiver acknowledging they understand the application process but choose not to apply. Schools must still award diplomas to students who cannot meet these requirements due to extenuating circumstances, provided they have met all other graduation requirements and the school has made a good faith effort to assist them.
