AI Summary
This bill amends the Emergency Telephone System Act to modify the monthly surcharge limits for network connections and commercial mobile radio service (CMRS) connections in municipalities with populations over 500,000. Specifically, the bill extends the current $5 per network connection surcharge limit until December 31, 2027 (previously set to expire on December 31, 2025) and reduces it to $2.50 per network connection starting January 1, 2028. Similarly, for wireless carrier surcharges, the bill allows municipalities with over 500,000 residents to continue imposing up to a $5 monthly surcharge per CMRS connection until December 31, 2027, after which the surcharge will be limited to $2.50. The bill also maintains provisions that allow these municipalities to use the collected surcharge funds for anti-terrorism and emergency preparedness measures, such as planning, training, and specialized equipment. The legislation takes effect immediately upon becoming law, providing continuity and flexibility for local emergency telephone systems.
