This bill expands bereavement leave for certain state government employees by establishing new paid leave provisions when an employee experiences the death of a family member. Specifically, state officers and employees will now be entitled to three days of paid leave for the death of siblings, grandparents, grandchildren, foster parents, or parents-in-law; five days of paid leave for the death of parents or stepparents; and ten days of paid leave for the death of a spouse, children, or stepchildren. The bill applies to employees in various state agencies, boards, and departments as outlined in Tennessee Code Annotated sections 8-30-102(a), 8-30-102(b)(2)-(11), and 8-30-102(b)(13). By providing these expanded bereavement leave options, the bill recognizes the emotional challenges employees face when losing close family members and aims to give them additional time to grieve and manage personal affairs without financial penalty. The legislation takes effect immediately upon becoming law.
