This bill amends Tennessee law regarding sentences for driving under the influence (DUI), which is a violation of § 55-10-401. Previously, individuals sentenced to jail time for a DUI had to begin serving their sentence within 30 days of being convicted, or as soon as jail space became available if there wasn't immediate room. This bill removes that strict 30-day requirement and instead gives the sentencing court the authority to decide when the convicted individual must start serving their jail time. The bill amends Tennessee Code Annotated (TCA) Title 55, which covers motor and other vehicles, and Title 65, which covers public utilities and carriers, and takes effect immediately upon becoming law.
