This bill modifies Tennessee's laws regarding retail package stores (liquor stores) in metropolitan government areas. Specifically, the bill changes existing statutes to allow retail package store licenses to be issued in general services districts of a metropolitan government, provided that the metropolitan government has approved the retail sale of liquor for off-premises consumption through a local option election. Previously, such licenses were restricted from general services districts. The bill amends three sections of Tennessee Code: Section 7-3-303, which modifies language about service districts; Section 57-3-106, which adds a new subsection allowing package store licenses in general services districts; and Section 57-3-205, which expands the potential locations where package store licenses can be issued. The changes essentially provide more flexibility for metropolitan governments to determine where liquor stores can operate within their jurisdictions, giving local governments greater control over alcohol sales. The bill would take effect immediately upon becoming law, as determined by the Tennessee General Assembly.
